WHITEVILLE, N.C.--Sailing, swimming and plenty of sinking was all a part of the Whiteville Rotary Club's Cardboard Boat Race on Lake Waccamaw Saturday.

This is the first year the club has held the event, and they had more than 200 people come out to race.

Teams or individuals had to build boats made almost entirely out of cardboard and race them around buoys.

"I was actually happy that my boat stayed afloat the whole time. I didn't get any water in there. It got tiring after about the last buoy and I was kind of excited, because I raced around the other guy. I thought he would beat me on that part," said cardboard boat racer, Lauren Passio.

The event was free to spectators, and awards were given out to race winners for certain categories, such as "most spectacular sinking."
