RALEIGH--Food Lion is launching its Operation Grocery Drop in Raleigh this weekend. Residents of the Pine Knoll Townes neighborhood woke up to find Food Lion employees knocking on their doors with carts full of groceries.

"I had no idea it was going to come to my door, I was so surprised," resident Maria Meccia said.

"I didn't know what to think I was like oh my god! What is going on? Is this for real or am I being pranked?" resident Lywanda Spencer said.

Spencer was among dozens of residents to get the goods. Food Lion employees say they're proud of their company.

"I'm very emotional about it. I think it's really great getting into the community and getting our name out there. Showing people what we're all about and giving them free product. It helps. In today's society and economy, it's really going to help," Food Lion manager Cindy Gradwell said.

People got to fill up grocery bags with goods from Food Lion's new "my essentials" brand. In a recovering economy, the charity goes a long way.

"I think it's gonna help a lot. To be able to get free groceries and be surprised about it, I think is really cool thing," Food Lion area director Mike Hall said.

"The way the economy is everybody can use something, and this is such a blessing OMG I just can't believe it," Spencer said.

Food Lion said they will do more drops in various locations across the state. Locations and times have not been announced.
