RIEGELWOOD, N.C. — A public meeting on a proposed widening project for Highway 87 in Columbus County and Bladen County was held in Riegelwood Thursday night.

Some residents said the project would increase safety and ease traffic congestion.

"It eliminates the heavy traffic right near people's houses and it's congested. There's a lot of highways. A lot of big trucks on the roads and I feel that it's good for the community," said area resident Kennath Daniels.

Yet others expressed concern about the fact that it would force them to move.

"They are going to take my home which i spent my entire life. We moved there in 1970. And I've planted $167 [worth of] wood trees and we have a fence. We have an in-ground pool. All of that is going to be...They are not going through the middle of it but they're going within a few feet of my front door to where I won't have any privacy and I won't have any quality of life," said area Resident Joanne Nunnery.

It's not known yet when a decision on the project will be made.
