BEAUFORT, NC — Budget Travel Magazine is running a contest called "America's coolest small town."  Out of 647 nominated towns nationally, Beaufort has made into the top 10.

Area residents say Beaufort should nab the top spot because it combines a historical significance with coastal scenery all wrapped in southern charm. New York resident John Scanlon makes Beaufort his winter retreat.

"I like the laid back atmosphere and the ability to walk around downtown and go to the different shops and restaurants," said Scanlon.

Beaufort resident Justin Ridge said the town is well-maintained and he appreciates how eco-conscious the community is. Ridge said the residents do good job of keeping area pristine. Beaufort resident Michelle Brodeur said there is always something to do regardless of the season.

"There's a lot of outdoor activities in the summer time such as kayaking and spending time out on the water," said Brodeur.  "In the winter time you can go running or do yoga, just to stay active in the community."

Established in the 1709, Beaufort is home to Blackbeard's notorious flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge.  Scanlon says the area is full of history and culture and makes a great vacation destination.

"It's just a great place for me to be because this is the type of lifestyle I like," said Scanlon.
