A hearing that could remove a New Hanover County commissioner from his position will most likely move forward. Commissioner Brian Berger had attempted to postpone the amotion hearing set for Monday, by filing a restraining order against his fellow commissioners. However, as of Friday, a judge had not granted that order.

Beach nourishment funds could get a large boost thanks to Sen. Kay Hagan. She helped pass the Water Resources Development Act in the Senate that would fund key dredging and shoreline projects. If approved, Surf City and north Topsail Beach will receive money to curb erosion.

A report from the market research firm IRI says sales of white, granulated sugar are up 15 percent since 2009. Last year, Americans spent nearly $1.7 billion. The increase in white sugar sales comes as Americans shy away from artificial sweeteners. Sales of Splenda are down 40 percent since 2009, the study said, and Sweet'N Low purchases are off 16 percent.
