FAYETTEVILLE--Complaints about telemarketers are on the rise in North Carolina.

It's that phone call that so many people try to avoid, a robocall or pre-recorded pitch trying to sell you something, and sometimes its an actual person on the other line.

"They usually come in between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., they are usually asking for money or a donation and if it's a number that I do not recognize I just let the voicemail catch it and I just sit back and listen,” said Fred Burden.

Attorney General Roy Cooper says even people on the "Do Not Call" registry are continuing to receive these calls.

"We've seen the numbers of complaints unfortunately go up in the last three years, we had 740 complaints in 2010 and that number doubled in 2011 to over 1,400 and this year we are headed to 3,000. We are headed to doubling again," said Cooper.

After the "Do Not Call”registry that so many people have listed themselves on, many consumers don't understand why the calls keep coming.

Cooper said with technology today and the ability for telemarketers to make fake caller ID numbers, law enforcement is having trouble tracking down the offenders.

"If you you are on the "Do Not Call” registry and somebody is calling you that should give you a tip that they are likely up to no good, that they do not care about obeying the law and many times they are after your money and sometimes your identity," said Cooper.

Cooper recommends not answering the phone and if you do, hang up, but keep track of the number that may appear on your caller ID.
