KERNERSVILLE, N.C.--Garden experts say the fall season is the prime time to get your yard and garden ready for winter and spring.
They recommend planting trees, shrubs, perennials, and spring-blooming bulbs during this time of year.
They also say aerating your lawn will keep it healthy as temperatures get colder.
"It breaks up the crust of the soil, stimulates the root system, and most importantly, adds oxygen back into the soil,” explained Ronald Couch, a certified nurseryman who also works for Home Depot.
"If you want a cool season grass, you can overseed with rye, or you could do your warm season grass, which will come up in the spring,” said Adrienne Roethling, who serves as the garden curator for Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville.
It's recommended you keep your grass around three inches, so you only need to mow twice a week.
