RALEIGH -- Wake County parents will soon learn about new changes to the policy that determines what school their students will be assigned to. Tuesday evening the Wake County School Board will unveil the details of a new address-based assignment plan for the next school year.

The current choice plan that gave parents a chance to rank the school of of their choice has without a doubt been the center of controversy for the past year. But now we'll see some changes to the assignment policy as the school board gets ready to release the details of an address-based plan that will featured a designated school for every home.

Some school officials say the new plan would promote diversity by assigning every address to a specific school.

"It's a blend between the base assignment and there will be an element of selection," said Superintendent Tony Tata.

Those in favor of the changes argued address-based assignments will bring stability and predictability to the plan. But those who prefer the school choice plan said families are just getting used to it and changing it now would create more confusion and frustration.

Meanwhile, Tata says the new plan is the best compromise moving forward.

"I'm sure there will be some modifications, but we feel the staff is presenting a good plan," he said.

Parents will be able to comment on it at five public hearings beginning on Monday..

The board is scheduled to adopt a final plan in late October. Tuesday night's meeting begins at 5:30 p.m.
