FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — For 22,000 households in Forsyth County, placing a recycling bin on the curb is not an option. However that is about to change as Waste Management phases in curbside service for all unincorporated areas of the county.

Minor Barnette with the Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection says there will be a number of benefits.

"[There will be] conservation of natural resources, prevention of pollution and extending the life of our landfill so the more people we can get to recycle the more we all benefit in the community," said Barnette.

According to Barnette, currently 35 percent of material put in the landfill could have been recycled. However for a lot of people living in the county, recycling is not easy. There are only three recycling drop-off locations throughout the county which is one of the reasons why officials think some currently do not recycle.

The new service will cost $2.65 a month.

"With transportation costs being what they are most people couldn't drive to one of the convenient centers to drop off recyclables for that price," said Barnette.

Barnette hopes the county's amount of recycled goods will double in the next five years. To subscribe to the new service, call Waste Management at (336)723-5744.
