CHARLOTTE – Planning for the Democratic National Convention kicked into high gear Tuesday morning with officials awarding three major contracts to companies now responsible for transforming Time Warner Cable Arena for the global stage.
“I'm pleased to tell you that Charlotte and the Carolinas are well represented today,” said Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx.
The contracts include construction manager, event architect along with exposition and event services provider.
Two of the companies are headquartered in Charlotte and many of the others have close ties to the surrounding region.
“The firms chosen represent the best of the Carolinas and the diversity of America,” said DNCC CEO Steve Kerrigan. “The resources and experience of the national firms, partnered with the knowledge and network of local firms makes this team uniquely prepared for a project of this size and scope.”
“It's a wonderful win,” added Pat Rodgers, president and CEO of Rodgers Builders.
Her company, which is one of the two headquartered in Charlotte, is part of the construction management team.
For the next eleven months they will help oversee the temporary modification and restoration of the arena, manage contractors and subcontractors and make sure the building is ready for everybody who needs it.
“We'll have several hundred new jobs as a result of this. Where those jobs will be and what they'll be right now, I think it's just a bit too early to tell but it's a large project with a scope that has to be completed in a relatively short period of time,” she added.
The convention has come under scrutiny over where these hundreds of jobs will come from for the entire project.
Organizers stress their focus is local.
“We hope to maximize our participation in union labor across the board in all the contracts where we can but we're going to focus on making sure local businesses and local employment is a priority as well,” said Kerrigan.
The contracts awarded Tuesday are worth a combined $7 million.
Crews will have access to Time Warner Cable Arena starting July 14.
