More than 25 billion apps have been downloaded from Apple's App Store, and now some North Carolina students are spending part of their summer vacation learning how to make their own.

"I want them to come to know that they can build iPhone apps. And we're going to give them a little of how to do that, and more of how to learn how to do it," said computational mathematician Rob Hochberg.

"Xcode, the program that we're running, is really user friendly, in the fact that you can use a graphical interface instead of everything being straight code which makes it a little bit easier," said UNC Asheville student Kyle Garner.

By looking at their computer screens, “easy” wouldn't be a term most would use to describe all of the complicated code, but these students seem to get it.

"When you start off it's hard to do the codes, but then once you keep doing it and you get used to it, it's easy," said ninth grader Braxton King.

"I like watching the 'ah-hah moments,' and I like showing kids that they can do things that they maybe didn't think they could do beforehand," said Hochberg.

"I like learning how to actually make a code, and learning all the methods. It's really fun because it's something other people can't do," said ninth grader Ava Pausback.

This means there's a very practical application to making apps, and most of these teens said they want to take these skills and create careers.

"My dad does advertising. I plan on helping him with his companies, and building apps for other companies as a living," said Pausback.
