RALEIGH -- Some young people saw first hand that science can be a little gross during the Minds on Summer Science Program. This year's theme is "the ick factor" and focuses on biomedical science.

Monday, kids examined germs through a microscope, made their own scabs and learned how to identify blood types. Organizers say the hands on activities help kids get excited about careers in science.

"A lot of times when they hear science they automatically think, 'oh we're going to be looking at books, we're just going to be reading the whole time,'" said Julie Fruit, a Morehead Planetarium summer educator. "So it's just kind of getting them to see that hey science can be fun, we can get our hands dirty."
