ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — One North Carolina afterschool program strives to excite kids about science.

The Morehead Planetarium after-school program delivers more than a hands-on science lesson. UNC students pick up and deliver students with the help of public transportation, to the planetarium. While at the planetarium, the children do a variety of interesting science activities.

"[It is] really cool, because I can't think of a reason. But yeah, really cool," said fourth-grader Andres Angeles Pardes.

In a day's worth of activities, fourth and fifth-graders used small, lego-like programmable computers to design a mini golf course. Second and third-graders experimented with pressure and water by shooting bottle caps. Kindergarten and first-graders launched water rockets and answered questions about water pressure.

"Science is all about questioning in my mind. I think if you ask a question, then you're a scientist. And really, I just want them to know that asking a question, looking into the question, and maybe finding out that you're wrong is okay," said Kyle Hunter with the Morehead afterschool program.

The students get to test and prove their own theories; making science stretch seamlessly into afterschool time.
