At the Learning Center students explore toys and uncovering scientific principles that involve play. The center is based at the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington.

Students investigated the science of toys: why do tops spin, how does a yo-yo work and what makes a car move. Cape Fear Museum educator Pepper Hill says this is a hands-on approach to a field that could be a little scary to some.

"The earlier you start someone being excited about science then the less they are going to have a resistant to science," she said. "That is finding with a lot of students once they get to middle school is there resistance to science, especially females unfortunately, so we try and inspire students very early on."

And Hill says the goal is to make this hands-on, exciting approach to science stick with everyone who comes to enjoy the museum.

"Hopefully tomorrow when she is holding a ball and she lets go of it, it falls to the floor and she says the word gravity," she said. "So she does take those lessons home with her."
