CHARLOTTE- New numbers reveal a growing unemployment number among people working in the construction industry. The U.S. Labor Department calculates a 17.7 percent unemployment rate in the sector.

That figure is about double other careers.

"I think we were fortunate compared to most. I think a lot got hit harder." said Gary Olnowich of The Linda Construction Company.

The negative affects of the construction industry pains are having some positive impact on projects being built. Universities, churches and hospitals are three industries still funding new construction.

Carolinas Healthcare System is building on five floors and 175,000 sq. ft. to create the Levine Cancer Institute. The $25 million project is being overseen by Rodgers Builders.

“The growth has been exponential. The building itself began construction back in March of 2011. Expect completion this fall." said Andrea Flynn of Carolina's Healthcare System.

Olnowich said similar jobs are being completed so quickly because there are so many employees willing to work.

"They put more people on the job, it gets done faster, ahead of schedule. So that's good for the developer, owner, at times. For the contractor it's not as good because we have nowhere else to send the people," said Olnowich.

Meanwhile, the groups building on are seeing projects done faster and under budget.
