WILMINGTON — A new report estimates UNC Wilmington's volunteers are valued at almost $4 million.

UNCW volunteers donated 178,000 hours of service at more than 700 locations in the 2010- 2011 school year. One group of volunteers teaches a step class to students at DC Virgo Charter School in downtown Wilmington and saved the school a lot of money.

"If we have a student or student group come in and do an arts program within a school, instead of them having to pay a staff member to come in and do those programs, our students are volunteering so that's where the figure comes in. It's the economic impact of it but we're doing is certainly a whole lot more,” said Jenni Harris with UNCW Community Partnerships.

Harris said the university aims to make an impact in the community and help students learn practical skills through volunteer work.
