RALEIGH, N.C. – A rock climber from Cary fell to his death Sunday in Hanging Rock State Park.

Officials say 19-year-old Eric Metcalf fell around 7 p.m. in the Stokes County park. Investigators say he fell around 270 feet while trying to rappel off Moore's Wall cliff in the park. Metcalf was pronounced dead at the scene.

The park's superintendent says that Metcalf was an experienced climber, but that a rope-handling error may have caused the fall.
