CHARLOTTE -- A 1-year-old and 5-year-old were killed Wednesday after being hit by a Sears box truck in west Charlotte. Charlotte Mecklenburg police say the driver, Dirk Brown, hit the children at 8:30 a.m. in the intersection of Shady Lane and west Tyvola Road as their father was walking them to daycare in the area.
Employees from the daycare center the children attended came to the scene to confirm what they heard.
The delivery truck involved remained parked for several hours as investigators looked over it to check for any malfunctions. Dirk, 32, and a passenger in the truck were questioned.
"It's heartbreaking, you know, especially when you see a lady crying," said neighbor James Boulter. "I knew something real bad had happened."
Bouler also said the intersection is a dangerous because there are no sidewalks and a lot of pedestrians.
"When you travel this road every morning and you see the same faces out there waiting on the buses and the parents waiting," he said. "I just don't know what happened this morning."
This deadly crash is still being pieced together but it's easy to see time and time again, pedestrians dangerously close to cars.
Police have not released the names of the children. The mother was at work when she was notified about the crash.
