EMERALD ISLE, N.C. — The Emerald Isle EMS is hoping to train the next generation of EMTs.
They started a program last year called Explorer Post which provides firsthand experience in the field of pre-hospital care. It allows high school students to see if a medical career is right for them. The EMS Chief, Doug Fleming is impressed by the volunteers, who also have competed and won in state competitions.
"Their performance has just been outstanding, as you can see there are already three trophies here that they have participated in. so we've been working on just the fundamental basics of EMS," said Flemming.
For those interested in joining the program, there are some mandatory requirements:
• You must be enrolled in a high school and be between the ages of 14 through 21
• Be able to maintain a school average of "C" or better
• Attend all post meetings
• Complete all initial training and a CPR course
• Learn the use of emergency equipment
The Explorers are part of the Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life program which gives students the opportunity to learn about different careers.
