WILMINGTON -- Wrightsville Beach's Museum of History is going back in time to show kids how the beach looked a century ago. The museum's interns organized the first annual "Lazy day at the beach" event.
Six-year-old Bennett McNeil took a look at a model showing how his town looked in 1909.
"It looks cool," he said.
McNeil said one thing he wishes was still on the beach was the movie screen. The town used to play silent movies for beachgoers to enjoy. He isn't the only one who wishes they could step into the model and back in time.
" I wish I could go down to the beach and watch a movie at the beach or go to a dance hall or play on the swings right out in the ocean," said museum intern Lauren Reyes.
The days of heavy traffic and paying for parking didn't exist back then. Trolleys would take you to and from the beach, Reyes said it was a way to bring people together.
"I think we would all be a more connected community because we would have to bring trolleys down here versus people taking their own cars struggling for parking with parking passes and parking fines and all that everyone would just ride the trolley," said Reyes.
Also the days of trendy attire with those fun bathing suits.
"They were part of the era and are truly unique and it would be fun to sport those back in the day," said Robin Anderson of Wrightsville Beach.
Organizers said they plan to make Lazy Day at the Beach an annual event.
