WILMINGTON – Some new moms are catching on to a new fitness craze.

Stroller Strides is a growing trend that benefits both moms and their children.

"It's an hour-long class. We do cardio, strength training, core exercises, balance – the whole thing you can do in a hour with your baby," said Jody Smith, Stroller Strides Wilmington owner.

The idea for the franchise originated on the West coast. Now it's grown to over 300 locations, including several across North Carolina.

"More and more moms, like I said, are not wanting to sacrifice time with their kids, but still, get back in shape and exercise seems to be on more and more people's minds," said Smith.

Moms like Kathy Upchurch are pushing their strollers to lose the baby weight, but they also get a special opportunity to learn and bond with their kids at the same time.

"He has learned to spell Bingo because of the song and he knows his alphabet," said Upchurch.

As moms walk, run or workout their triceps, they aren't just getting into shape, but teaching their kids to lead a healthy lifestyle.

"She's actually been copying the exercises. One of the exercises includes leg kicks leaning against a wall and she has actually started doing that," said Upchurch.

The program works like having a gym membership. Moms pay for the training and get classes taught by certified instructors who are also moms. Participants said it's worth every loop on the track.

"You know the camaraderie with the other moms -- we have so much in common, and you get to share stories about what your kids are doing at a certain phase in life," said Kary Massengil.
